Re: Rio Ferdinand
Yep, I remember having TalkSport on the afternoon Rio got injured, they general consensus was that he wouldn't be missed because England have 'better' replacements who were 'World class' ..of course Adrian Durham, 'Quinny' & co lapped it up.
Then again, they've got Wayne to blame entirely for England's exit so I'm sure they're all still pretty content |

No striker in the world would enjoy playing in the current England side, the lack of creativity in midfield is embarrassing - either through the middle or out wide. but of course it's much easier to single out one player (especially if he plays for United) |

Re: Rio Ferdinand
Ferdinand between 06-09 was possibly the best CB in the world and he allowed both Vidic and Terry to play that aggressive style safe in the knowledge that he was there to sweep up and cover. Most English fans watch football at a level where Terry like players(inferior models of course) are the only way to play that position. Someone like Ferdinand who makes the game look so easy and does not have to go off his feet constantly does not fit that easy stereotype and is hard for them to judge.
Utd fans are lucky to see players of the class of Rio, Scholes and Giggs every week, rare breeds as British players. |

of course, ferdinand is so much more that that and is very comfortable playing quite high up the pitch, effectively as a sitting midfielder when united have possession, and participating in the construction of the play. terry is incapable of that, sits deep and inevitably looks for the heroic long ball if he receives it from the midfield. presumably fergie has seen similar ability on the ball to ferdinand in smalling. when i've seen him (not much) he does appear very comfortable on the ball and to be quite at home maintaining possession at the back. i'm sure he'll be expected to develop that side of his game at united. |
