[SIZE="5"]Italian Press: Casillas & Torres Favourites For Ballon D’Or

According to reports in the Italian press, Spain stars Iker Casillas and Fernando Torres are the two favourites for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Prior to Euro 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo was believed to be the frontrunner to win the prestigious prize following a prolific season for Manchester United, during which he scored 42 goals in all competitions.

However, Ronaldo may have harmed his chances of winning the prize after a relatively poor Euro 2008. The Portuguese attacker has also faced constant criticism that he fails to perform in the big games.

As a result, sections of the Italian press claim that Iker Casillas and Fernando Torres are the two main favourites ahead of Ronaldo.

Casillas had a stunning club campaign for Real Madrid, playing a key part in their La Liga success. He was also a major protagonist in Spain’s historic Euro 2008 triumph, particularly in the quarter final penalty shootout win over Italy.

Torres was also decisive in Austria and Switzerland, scoring the winner in the 1-0 final victory over Germany. The 24-year-old had a superb debut season for his club Liverpool, scoring 33 goals in all competitions.

Beneath Casillas and Torres, the three other players who are said to be in with a chance of winning the Golden Ball are Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Russia star Andrei Arhsavin.

The last Spaniard to win the Ballon d’Or was former Inter and Barcelona legend Luis Suarez, way back in 1960.

Maybe Van Der Saar should win it for his stunning perfomance in the Champions League penalty shootout?

Where was Casillas as Madrid got knocked out of Europe early again?

Where was Torres away from home?

Italian press were talking about Toni winning it earlier.

Would take their 'reports' with a grain of salt.

Ronaldo will win it, 2 weeks of football in which Torres was quite average does not outweigh a record breaking season of brilliance from Ronaldo where he won the 2 big ones.

If he doesnt get it this year it would all but confirm their anti PL agenda. And probably be more motivation for the glory seeking Ronaldo to leave England.

Was also a report in L'Equipe suggesting that Torres is the favourite for the award, with Ronaldo in second place and Casillas third. L'Equipe and France Football are very close, both operating in the same building and owned by the same publishing company.

Bad enough when they (laughably) gave it to Owen...but Torres over Ronaldo? The @#%&! scored less goals then Ronaldo in the same League, almost all of them at Anfield. And helped the bastards win £#%&! all. Then at Euro 2008 he only managed to score as many goals as Zlatan - albeit in twice as many games!

£#%&!ing shite.

I'm fuming. If it's true. They said the year before the reason he didn't get it was because he didn't win the European Cup. So he does that, scores in the final, but apparently now they won't give it to him because he didn't win Euro 2008
