Exclamation Tissue Island Discs (2) #4 - Sweetleftfoot

Good evening TIDder's and a very warm welcome to you all for tonight's show.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce tonight's guest, Sweetleftfoot to the Tissue Island Disc's studio.

He has behaved impeccably in the Green Room and enjoyed the TID's hospitality and is now ready for his big moment - so let's get on with it....

Here are his selections:

Tom Waits Please call me

My Bloody Valentine You made me realise

The Housemartins Flag Day

The Flying Burrito Brothers Hot Burrito #1.

Led Zeppelin Black Dog.

Inspiral Carpets Move.

Miles Davis Blue In Green.

Billy Bragg Tank Park Salute

A warm welcome Sweetleftfoot,

An eclectic mix of tracks spanning several decades - start us off with your first selection by American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor, Tom Waits - why has it made the last 8...?

Evening Bren, evening Fredsters.

Tom Waits is superb. Great song, although the choice is more for the full album. Probably my favourite ever album. Evokes really strong memories of my first son being born (He was 10 at Christmas). I was having to commute about an hour and a half, so Id be leathering back home to get to see him before he went to bed, usually with The Heart of Saturday Night on the tape player. A lad I was working with at the time gave me the tape and I just loved it. Love that early period Waits, after Heartattack and Vine he becomes more difficult to listen to. Done some of his best work latterly though...

He's certainly had a distinguished career - getting the balance right between his cult status and commercial success.

I had to laugh when you said it was on tape...

I know, it dates it a lot. Shows my age! It was an Escort Ghia as well

A Boy-Racer aswell then - with Tom Waits on...

Track 2 is by one of many fine Dublin bands; shoe-gazers My Bloody Valentine and their offering from 1988's untitled EP, You Made Me Realise.

What memories does this conjure up for you....?

You made me realise is f***ing superb. Its a great big rush of a song. The first band I ever saw live, and the lead track off the ep they had out at the time. Such a powerful, hard hitting sound, really opened my ears to lots of alternative stuff. Loved the Isnt Anything album, and Loveless is a classic. Supposed to be back together this year, will be getting along to that. Very influential on a 16 year old whod been brought up in a pretty poppy house (Beatles, Blondie, Motown). A life changing song.

It's an incessant back beat to the song - how old was you when you saw them?

I had a tee shirt with the ep cover on and took myself sooooooo seriously.
