Default Huddersfield 3-3 Bournemouth (Huddersfield win 4-2 on penalties) match report

Huddersfield Town are one game away from a return to the second tier for the first time since 2001 after overcoming Bournemouth in a thrilling League One play-off semi-final. An enthralling tie ended 3-3 after extra-time, 4-4 on aggregate, but Lee Clark's players kept their nerves from the spot to secure a 4-2 win on penalties and a trip to Old Trafford to take on the winners of the tie between MK Dons and Peterborough.

With the game all square from the first leg on the south coast, Huddersfield took an early advantage with Lee Peltier putting the hosts in front after 26 minutes. Steve Lovell equalised from the penalty spot just before the break, but in first-half stoppage time Danny Ward curled a superb finish past Shwan Jalal to restore the Terriers' advantage.

Lovell squared things up again just after the hour with another wonderfully worked goal and with away goals holding no extra advantage the game went into extra-time.

Bournemouth took the lead for the first time in the tie after 104 minutes, Danny Ings directing his header past Ian Bennett, but Anthony Kay's towering header from a corner levelled things up once more just a minute later. There was still time for Bournemouth's captain Jason Pearce to be sent off for an ugly two-footed lunge in a breathless extra 30 minutes of thrilling football.

Bournemouth's Liam Feeney was the first to miss, with Bennett saving with his legs, Huddersfield were immaculate from 12 yards. Anton Robinson smashed his effort on to the bar for the Cherries before Kay hammered the final effort past Jalal for the victory.
