My favourite player

My favourite United player. I remember taking the wife to her first game (the home leg against Port Vale in 1994) and he shone like a beacon. I'd been told how he dominated the first leg, but he did the same in the second. And he only improved after that...

Aside from all the thunderbolts, a few other goals stand out for me. The header away at Spurs in 2003 was the point we all knew we'd win the league. We'd been 8 points behind about 6 weeks earlier and yet we knew we'd do it. His celebration that day was typically understated, but you sensed that he knew as well. There was a New Year's Day game against Sunderland which was going to end 1-1 but for his late intercession, a scrambled affair which lifted the spirits (and the hangover), and also a home game against Blackburn a few years back which we were really struggling in at 0-1, when myriad chances had gone begging, Friedel having his usual blinder against us, a quick shimmy from Scholes saw us finally get on the scoresheet and we eventually finished up winning 4-1.

And of course there was the day my shins got into the worst state they ever got in without playing football myself, at Villa Park during the 3-0...from about ten rows back I still ended up getting shoved over the wall onto the shale behind the goal...

Fabulous footballer and a great man, for me he was easily in the top 3 midfielders in the world at his best.
Wouldn't have swapped scholesy for any other midfielder in my time watching united.
