Angry Lets call a footballer something different!!

Why do commentators insist on pronouncing footballers names in totally the wrong way?

The worst one, which is currently in evidence in the City game is George Boateng.

Boateng has become - Bwwwwwwwwwateng! It's BO-A-TENG ffs!

And Phil Jagielka had become Phil Yagiyelka in the earlier game.

The phonetic pronunciation of a proper name is not often "correct." English commentators used to just pronounce names phonetically, and therefore incorrectly. These days they're trying to pronounce them as they're said in the player's own country.

I blame Jimmy Hill, he's the one who started it all off with his Can-toner.
