Well statistically a "step down" is correct.
In the last 9 years (since Alex Ferguson) has stepped down.... Manchester United has made it into the Champions League about 40% of the time with no Premier League title. Barcelona has made it into the Champions League 100% of the time with 4 La Liga league titles. (I think Tottenham currently have a better record of getting into the Champions League?) You can only live off of past glories and stink on the field for so long before top players start refusing to join your club because they think it will be a wasted career with limited trophies. |
