07-09 he was consistently excellent for Utd, really sharp passing, creative from deeper areas, constantly finding clever gaps and angles. Added to that he was very proactive defensively in a subtle way, cutting off passes, positionally excellent. He received a lot criticism for the CL final and this season he has been way below his best, always taking the easy sideways pass which shows a lack of confidence in himself.

On form he is an excellent player for us and he has made enough of a contribution over the last 3 years to be given the time to rediscover his best form.

Agree with that but also agree that he has been class before that.

He got lots of stick at West Ham for being the same as he showed tonight.When it's not going too well, not standing up and being counted, bottling challenges etc.

We really need a massive reshuffle/clear out - but then we get back to the £#%&!ing cash situation.

I'd still pick him, every game of consequence in center midfield.

Maybe but think of the match at Inter, when he totally dominated the midfield, big occasion, high pressure and he seemed to thrive in it. Second half of 08/09 was patchy but there were enough good performances to still call it a decent season for him, and statistically in terms of assists he had an excellent season, something like 13, which was the most that one of our central midfielders accumulated since Scholes in the treble season.

He is struggling but he is too good to good to forget about.

He was dropped at the start of this season, and Fergie made clear in the press that Carrick needed to step it up.

To no avail.

Can't tackle, can't shoot, has no balls, one-paced, and now has lost the ability to pass.

He adds nothing whatsoever.

The sooner we get Hargreaves back (if we ever do) and get a bit of dynamism back in midfield, the better.

An attacking midfielder wouldn't hurt either.

confidence gone, i reckon. which is a big problem considering where he plays - with games getting won in midfield you need to be switched on constantly. at the moment it seems like he'd rather be hanging back zipping balls forward, but his form is affecting him as a playmaker and he seems reluctant to get stuck in at other times. which isn't much good in his position.

i just dont get why he seems incapable of making forward balls.

even when he gets the chance to shoot he seems to take soo long to make up his mind.

Ando does the same, but tbh i dont think we expect that much from him.

but Carrick we've seen thread balls in through the eye of the needle, especially during his first two seasons.

dont know why he's gone backwards like that.

Absolutely spot on...

Can't remember what the numbers were but we had an excellent counter second half. Carrick received the ball, turned in field, and Owen, Rooney (and Giggs I think) were bursting forwards. A ball over the top - not overly ambitious - would've put Owen in on a run towards goal. Carrick opted to take a few more touches before skipping past Barry (who was busting a gut to get back) and pass the ball back to one of our CBs.

Summed him up tonight, and this season tbf.

Sad to see isn't it? Not sure why he was brought on, and the way he just gave it away at the end was hugely frustrating. Gets caught on the ball far too easily nowadays, doesn't have the legs to support the attack and doesn't score - (West Ham aside).

Which really is why we need an attack-minded box-to-box midfielder to play alongside Fletcher. But we probably wont do anything except get in a winger.
