he's not a hollywood player. individual awards go to players with that star quality - i.e. media and tv friendly - or to players who win a world cup or similar (cannavaro). it's the same reason that messi and iniesta are lauded above xavi, though it's xavi who is the real heartbeat of that barca team, the same reason gerrard was praised over alonso, though liverpool and gerrard are in dire straits without alonso, the same reason zidane was praised over makalele, though real fell apart once makalele left.

You were going very well before you brought Makelele into it.

Different sort of player to Alonso, Xavi and Scholes.

Better question, who's out there now that United could realistically (or otherwise) get in to replace Scholes?

Or is Fletcher going to fulfill that role?

Ronaldo edges Giggs because he really propelled us to that European Cup win and making the final again this year.

We had the best player in the world playing for us for 2 seasons.

I have to go for Ronaldo too. He was just ridiculously good for us. The best player in the world and he played for us. Don't think that has been the case since the 60s

If people are seriously talking about Ronaldo, I don't see why we shouldn't hand it to Scholes as he was magnificent for the first half of the decade and good for the second half of it.

Ronaldo was only truly exceptional in 2008.

By that logic, Ruud should be in there.

celtbion, you are a crank. Ronaldo was exceptional for 3 years running at united. We have had immeasurable fun watching united during his time as well as trophies.

Borsuk, I couldn't disagree with you more apart from the fact that scholes is a exceptional player. Fergie didn't build the team around scholesy at all. In fact, what fergie wanted was to utilize scholesy's vision and eye for a pass/shot further ahead of the pitch. That's why veron was brought. To orchestrate the play from midfield alongside keane and for the ginger prince to weave his magic further upfield.

In fact, if you see this decade, scholes had 1 exceptional season, few very good ones and few average to decent ones. That exceptional season came in 2002-03 when he was playing as a second striker behind ruud.

Player of the decade:

1) Ronaldo 59%
2) Giggs 22%
3) Scholes 9%

you can build a team around a player anywhere on the field, whether it's further up (platini, maradonna, zidane) or further back (robson, keane, xavi, beckenbauer) is irrelevant. hth.
