the group stages are.

The days of 'groups of death' are long gone given how ridiculously over-protected the big teams are.

There's no jeopardy any more, it's just a boring trudge to the next round.

Napoli at least appear to be playing some great stuff and have some exciting players as well as buccaneering style. First time Ajax have lost by 5 goals since 1964 apparently

Champions league is always entertaining

25 goals across a handful of fixtures....

It’s lost a lot of its prestige for me.

In the 90s group games had cup final atmospheres. Now they’re about doing a professional job and injury avoidance first. It’s become a bit of a weird comp with time.

Too much teams and too much tv has sterilised it. (yeah yeah it was better in Stickmans youth etc etc)

Where there two group stages when we played Bayern (I think), we were drawing so both we were through so both teams, pretty much, just passed it around aimlessly for the last ten minutes or so.

May have dreamt that.

Just read it ran for four years. Can barely remember it.

I still enjoy the CL, even at group stages. Some of the games are boring, normally the big name games, but that’s often the case regardless of whether it’s in the groups or the knockouts. Benfica are worth watching atm because they might knock out Juve; stakes are high, and it’d be a shock if they did it, and that makes for an exciting group.

Also I like having games to watch midweek.

It’s the Europa that kills me

we did once get Bayern in our second group stage I think circa 2001-2002.

Your memory is of 98-99 in the last group game at home though.

Fiorentina H and Basel A my favourite group games memories from the double group stage.

oh and Juve away 3-0!
