Second time lucky. After the shambles of last summer, Manchester United have decided to play the €36m required to release Ander Herrera from his contract, and the plyer himself has an agreement with Van Gaal's new team. As AS revealed last week, the English side have made the Bilbao man a top target.

It is goodbye to Athletic, with whom he had a contract until 2015, and is a blow to Ernesto Valverde's side and their upcoming Champions League camapign - something which United cannot offer Herrera following their disastrous season under David Moyes. It will be seen if the Basque side dip into the market to replace Herrera, with only one player of this level available to them (given their Basque-only policy): Atlético Madrid's Raúl García.

The transfer has picked up pace in the past few days because on July 1 his clause increases to €40m.
