Yes and nobody ever seems to mention that these 'philosophies' only seem to come to fruition when you've assembled a team of the best players at an eye-watering cost.

Even from a philosophical standpoint it still makes no sense. Presumably the two main purposes in starting your build up from that deep are to a) stretch the opponent, creating more space to play through and b) keeping the passes shorter and more accurate so you can retain possession further up field rather than playing longer 50/50 type balls - but teams that press high, like Liverpool, are stretched anyway, so you don’t need to do it. On top of that, why give them what they want? The risk vs reward is off the charts; all it takes is one bad touch or slack ball and you’re 2-0 down after 7 minutes.

Say what you want about Mourinho, but one of his talents has always been making the opposition play the game they like least. Usually his own players too.

Yep.

Mourinho had no problem playing the ball straight out of the defence against liverpool to beat that press. We had some good success against them at home doing that. Most notably when Lukaku pulled onto Lovren as the out and Rashford was running rings round alexander Arnold.

It wasnt just some hopeful ugly punt upfield either. It was calculated.

Anyway, that's enough praise for Jose.
