I'd imagine it was because united were getting outfought physically. He mentioned it in a few interviews. In the absence of united quality players who are physical, he's going with fellaini. Herrera puts himself about, so he'd be in if fit. Will be interesting to see if he goes back in for someone like Vidal in january. He would be immense if fully fit again. Though I do think di Maria is less effective stuck out wide, and would suit being in the left midfield centre of a 433, which means no Vidal type player.
Only way Herrera gets dropped when fit is if he plays 433 or 4231 and goes with carrick and blind whilst preferring Rooney to Herrera behind the striker.
