Default Biennial World Cup

Does that appeal to you? Do you think it’s good for the game.

Monsieur Wenger seems to be right behind it. Can’t say it gets my juices flowing. The elite game is going to shit.

it's a shit idea.

The beauty of playing it every four years is the anticipation in the weeks leading up to it. More so than the Euros.

That will just get dissipated/diluted if this goes ahead.

It's a power struggle between egotistical @#%&!s yet again, with no regard for anything else.

I’ve not read into it but I’m assuming they’ll be pushing for the Euros to follow suit? So eventually we’ll have international tournaments every year, players being run into the ground and a general sense of lethargy among both the players and the fans.

International tournaments are so hit and miss too. Not a fan of this.

FIFA basically only make any money once every 4 years that’s why they’re desperate for this. They’d do it every year if they could.

UEFA have the CL, so they’re not as arsed with the Euros.

If it was introduced, you'd have to scrap the regionals as players would still need a decent break every other summer.

A club World Cup might be worth a shout? That might fire the imagination and spread some wealth around the other confederations.

They allegedly already have that, nobody gives a shit and Europe dominates.

I’d take it if it meant getting rid of internationals during the proper season.

Thumbs down

It's genuinely one of the worst ideas ever proposed within the game.

The World Cup is one of the only things remaining in football from a puritan perspective that hasn't been completely poisoned, and the fact it was awarded to Qatar has already tainted it to a large degree.

Hopefully that joke of a tournament in the winter of 2022 is a one-off transgression, but permanently switching it to a rolling 2-year cycle would damage it beyond recognition. It's the biggest tournament in the world, of any sport, largely because it's a rare event played twice a decade.

Surely you'd have more? There would have to be twice as many WC qualifiers played in any four year period.

fifa should focus on transparency. why do they have to make money? the bidding processes should lead to hangings.

Well if they’re going to be daft enough for every 2 years, just let the ones who will qualify in and let the minnows fight it out. Base it off prior year or something. Anything to get rid of mid season internationals

It’s purely about money

FIFA have been incredibly jealous of UEFA for years due to the success of the CL and the overall wealth of European football

Horrible idea and Wenger should be embarrassed he’s even involved in this
The uniqueness of the World Cup like the Olympics is that it is every 4 years
Make it every 2 years and it’s just becomes meh

It won't. Well not really. Wenger talking about putting aside the whole of October for WC qualifying matches

No prizes for guessing where they are having the meeting to discuss all this.

Michael Owen and John Terry are consulting. Surprised at Wenger though. Maybe he is still salty at being turfed from Arsenal.

If they scrapped the Euro’s it might work but even then it would still turn the WC in to a tedious event in much the same way pre and post Champions League changed the excitement of European nights.

As ever, money talks.

Not always, Tatty. I was as defeated as anyone when it comes to viewing the game nowadays through an understandably cynical prism, but the Ronaldo move to United showed me there is still a remnant of good in the game. He could have easily moved anywhere he wanted for more money, but he chose something else, something with a deeper meaning, born out of a respect for legacy.

Hopefully there is a similar force at work within these discussions, and the money men don't get their way.

Very disappointed in Wenger, FWiW. Really did not have him down as this type of guy.

And why do so? This summer shows how much it still remains a popular and viable competition.

Even without that, shit idea.

Awful idea. Only good European or South American teams win it anyway, so £#%&! the rest of the world off and have a European XI v a South American XI played on Ascension Island.
