Don’t want to be accused of being pedantic, but in legal terms (at least in the UK) “assault” does not require physical contact. It covers threats as well. Once it became physical then “battery” was the appropriate terminology . Hence the phrase (or song) “assault and battery”. So if she genuinely believed he would get his mates back home to sort her out, well ….
