And he doesn't deserve some kind of reverence because he's won a lot of things. Calling him by his first name is symptomatic of the kind of 'chummy' affectionate tone with which Liverpool players are referred to in the media, which coincidentally, is infested with ex liverpool players. It's the same thing that saw "stevie g" creep into the pundit vernacular.

Nobody ever called david beckham "becks" whilst on tv, i don't recall martin tyler or anyone calling Wayne Rooney "wazza" on comms.

No, as usual because it's the nations darlings, special treatment is afforded.
it's because his surname is long FFS. the whole Liverpool team arent called by their first name are they.

PLENTY of ex utd players are pundits.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was never called Jan. And he's got the biggest name in world history.

I've never heard anyone with a long or double barreled surname being called by their first name only, until Trent did. Its just odd.

That's where I watched it. Are you talking about after the game because during I didn't notice it?

Odd thing to get worked up about. Enjoy your impotent rage.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was never called Jimmy. Or Jim.

Well he was obviously but not by commentators or pundits.
