He played in this match too.

Fergie started with 7 defenders in a FA Cup QF against Arsenal. We had Wes Brown, O'Shea, the Twins, Gibson, Smalling and Valencia on the pitch and still won 2-0

1 point and GD from four straight titles and one win from another European cup with the likes of Smalling and Evans as mainstays and without a midfield, I’d say that’s genius.

Letting your rivals catch up with you by letting them sign Kompany, Aguero, Hazard etc whilst you sign Owen, Valencia Smalling and Young is not genius.

Moyes was the icing in the cake of that spell of decision making

We did try to sign Hazard.

There’s no doubt the club and by extension Ferguson went into retreat after ‘09, how much of that was him giving up on European domination post Ronaldo and how much was it down to the Glazers stripping back the club we’ll never know but despite the transition to shit@#%&!s over those four years we still had a record that was the envy of most.

Yes, the fact he was partly responsible for us starting to go downhill post-2009 is irrevelant to the above.

Another unfortunate thing is that because he was able to make bricks with straw, he presumed he successors could do so too

Nicky Butt was a very good player up until his last 2-3 years with Utd. Injuries slowed him down and turned him into a pedestrian trundler late but up to about 24 he was a mobile, aggressive force who always looked to pass forward. He was very good at those Carrick style whipped passes through midfield into the feet of the forwards, stupidly brave as well, he kept Scholes out of the team on merit for long periods of their early years.

All true. I think many people forget that Fergie preferred Butt over Scholes for several years
