Point is, you can't just say VAR is great cos a decision went in your favour.
Oh, and it didn’t cost them a top 4 spot. They finished 9th on 52 pts
Liverpool finished 5th on 58 pts & qualified for the 1st Qual
Round of the CL.

They would have got 4th if it was allowed to stand.

Fell in love with VAR last night, but it’s still going to ruin football.

Just doesn't work for football.

Fine in cricket which is Start/Stop Start/Stop.

OK in either rugby, similar reasons..

BUT we'd have (probably) won the league in 2005 with VAR.

Big fan today :-D

The ex-ref unequivocally said it was.

Having heard ex-players talk about fouls/diving & offside & be absolutely wrong, even tho they played for years means I’m going to side with the guy who was paid to be a ref.

As for VAR, I was agin it, now I’m fer it.

Imagine if we had VAR for the CL game v Porto? Would we have complained about VAR then?
Both Lescott and O'Shea who've played more recently than the BT panel, said the defender knew what he was doing by making himself a bigger target and under the latest set of rules it was a penalty.

No doubting it was soft but there's definitely justification for it.

(not that I give a shit tbh.)

Been having a read of the VIDEO ASSISTANT REFEREES (VARs) Implementation handbook for competitions.

Some interesting stuff in there (yes, really).

For instance,

Quote:
8.17 What happens if the VAR identifies a clear ‘missed’ penalty kick but also an offside in the build-up to the missed penalty?
The VAR sees that the referee has made a clear error in not awarding a penalty kick but there was also a clear ‘missed’ offside/handball in the attacking phase leading up to the incident –what should the VAR do?

This is not easy but for the management of the game and to avoid unnecessary criticism after the match, the referee should be informed of both situations at the next stoppage. The referee then has 2
options depending on how ‘clear’ the missed penalty error was and the state/atmosphere of the game:
.
.
.
So they are taking decisions so as not to invite criticism, regardless of whether they are correct or not and the ref is supposed to take the state and atmosphere of the game into account

So he might give the pen so he doesn't incite a riot?

It also says "except in exception circumstances" a number of times but gives no clue as to what "exceptional circumstances" actually might be.

The sort of language lawyers love but gives engineers the heeby geebies.
