Just realised the other thread was the Onana thread ffs.
I'm not sure how you're struggling with this signing. When Erikson was missing from the team last season we missed him. And when he was in the team he was partnering Bruno. The both played togegether. When he returned from injury he looked like he was knackered. He looks even more knackered this pre-season. We can barely rely on him to play a half of football, never mind a full season of at least 46 games.
Our midfield has been light for years, every season we go on about how we need midfielders. From last season to this season we can no longer rely on Erikson, a player that at the beginning of last season was a positive addition to the team. So we needed a replacement player in that position. Pretending we can shove wide players that been performing shit in their natural position is a ridiculous argument. Mount was available, wanted to join, has Premier League experience, plays internationally with a fair portion of our current squad and has won the Champions League.
It's one of the most obvious signings we could have possibly made.
We also need a defensive midfielder. Like I've said before, it's not one or the other (attacking midfielder
or defensive midfielder). We need both.
But at the moment we still have Fred and The Scottish Player at the club. What sense would it make for the club to bring in another defensive midfielder when we already have 3 at the club that regularly feature in the matchday squad, when we're also in need of an attacking midfielder because one we had last year can no longer be relied upon, and we have no other replacements? It's just not logical.
We're obviously looking at a defensive midfielder to bring in to improve the squad, but it's blindingly obvious that the club are trying to move on the deadwood in that very position before bringing in another body. Which makes perfect sense, even if it is a bit frustrating. None of this has anything to do with Mount that was required for another position that we needed to strengthen, no matter how much you want it to.
