Been waiting for Irk to start this thread, but apparently he's too busy searching for attention to keep up on current events.... anyway, extreme right wing new president of Brazil vows to liberate his country from socialism

can't wait to hear a load of informed comments about 'the left' except it will be entirely through the lens of american or UK definition of 'the left'.

Mate and his mrs were over visiting the states recently, he's Portuguese and she Brazilian. They live in the posh part of São Paulo, both do well and what would be considered internationalist. Said this bloke wasn't as bad as is being painted out and that the alternatives on the ballot were even worse.

Virtually word for word what my Brazilian ex-colleague/current chum told me over Christmas.

He's a lovely guy and as far from an evil fascist as you can get.

As Lazzers points out, we are so insular here and struggle to understand that left/right isn't exactly the same in other countries.

Rich people voting for a fascist because they want extra tax breaks, classic story.

"not as bad as painted out":

In an interview with Playboy magazine in 2011 Bolsonaro said that he “would be incapable of loving a homosexual son … I would prefer my son to die in an accident than show up with a moustachioed man.”

The former army man has spoken fondly of the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil between 1964 and 1985.

“The dictatorship’s mistake was to torture but not kill,” he told a radio interviewer in 2016.

In a speech made last year, Mr Bolsonaro spoke about a black settlement in Brazil founded by the descendants of slaves. “They do nothing. They are not even good for procreation,” he said.

He has also reportedly referred to black activists as “animals” who should “go back to the zoo”.

In 2014 Mr Bolsonaro got into a heated exchange with congresswoman Maria do Rosario in the lower house of Congress.

“I wouldn’t rape you because you don’t deserve it,” he said, in response to remarks made by Ms Rosario claiming he had encouraged rape.

Re the above posts, "nice" middle class liberals preferring fascism to socialism when push comes to shove isn't exactly unpredecented - as anybody aware of the 1930s and 40s will confirm.

What a surprise!

Seriously though, don't start quoting people who actually live in these countries. As with Venezuela n Cuba they are all thick/wrongheaded/fascists who haven't been told the score by the illuminated on here.

Yep, if a rich brazilian(probably of european descent) is defending a far right loon it must mean anyone outside of Brazil criticising Bolsonaro has been proven wrong. He's actually a nice guy, cuddles pets and babies. Even though he would want his own son dead if he was gay it must just be a misquote or something.
