wasn't sure when we signed him as I thought we needed more experience with Ferdinand's injury problems but he has removed all doubts

looks very assured and composed...a bit like a Rio mini me

Looks a much better option to the £#%&!ing liability that is Jonny Evans.

Got caught out twice, in the game which against any half decent side would put us two nill down.

I reckon about 50% of the goals we've let in this season have been a direct result of his positioning and awful marking.

Fair enough if he had abit of pace to get him out of trouble, but he doesnt.

No cracking first season, but been slowly getting worse from there.

Still not lost hope as, tbf he's only 22/23? But his performances have been way below average. Not good enough.

Just glad Rio has got back as quick as he has.

For the most part, but made one worrying decision.

Trying to hold off his man for VDS to come collect, instead of simply clearing the ball. If the keeper wants the ball he calls for it. A central defender starts making those decisions for him and you've got disaster. VDS bailed him out this time.

When Rio gets injured again, which he will, that's when the test will be. Evans looks shakey so Smalling is the key.

Looks like a cracking signing, with him and Rafael's emergance I reckon we've got half our defence for the next 10 years. Nice to see someone jumping all over Evans 'cos he's had a shaky start to the seaon.

No shit, fancy a Fergie being right about something and the idiots on here being wrong.

As long as Evans doesn't go all O'shea on us and go shit we have a 4 central defenders of a very high quality, which leaves us in a great position for years to come and will ease the transition from Vidic and Rio to a new partnership whenever that happens.

I'd say he'll cope with the domestic game a bit better than Pique would too tbh.

Proper £#%&!ing Value.

Lets not jump the gun shall we, Smalling looked pretty darned good this midweek and that is great news for us but lets remember he was playing against a gash team from a gash footballing country and we are a long way from seeing 7 rising to 10 million quids worth of footballer yet. Fingers crossed the boy keeps improving and becomes a class act for years to come.
