Smalling is a better defender. I'll take that over some being ok on the ball.

Point is that all we heard was how much better Maguire and Lindelof were compared to having to put up with Smalling again.

Neither of them doing much to back that up this season. We look no more solid with Smalling gone and about £120m worth of cbs replacing him.

Steve Bruce wasn't a great footballer but he could defend brilliantly.
We have spent £140 million on a defence that is still weak as shite.

Bruce was an immense defender.

I know total football etc. and Pique playing the ball out of defence in the CL under pressure etc. but dammit, I want a defender first and foremost to stop th'opposition scoring.

Exactly! The only decent ball playing defender we have had in recent years was Rio who was immensley talented. Just want our centre halves to win the ball and clear any danger. We can't seem to do it.

It’s also worth mentioning that even with Rio, we had Vidic being an absolutely mental bastard next to him.

It’s mad to think that in just a decade we’ve gone from those two to a skinny Swede and Matthew McGrory. Fingers crossed the latter can improve but Lindelof is almost the definition of “too weak for the PL”.
