I cant understand how anybody at the time thought it was appropriate for what was essentially a semi-pro coaching set up to be allowed to run the biggest club in the world.

It is ludicrous and i can only rationalise it by assuming it was part of a bigger plan to ease the 'real' choice in to the managers seat unencumbered by the shadow of Ferguson.
