Fergie was fiercely loyal to those he thought deserved it. Not sure the screw his family over line is even remotely applicable.
And he was clearly a master at man management. For the vast majority of his players that meant giving them the hairdryer treatment privately whilst publicly backing them. For others (Ronaldo, Eric etc...) it involved giving them a freedom few players enjoy. I loved the Class of '92 doc where the likes of Butt and Pip are talking about how he'd tell them he was saving them for a special game and that's why they couldn't play for the next 3 weeks. Then Pip would have the game of his £#%&!ing life when it mattered. The man was a genius. Sure he had his flaws (greed, handling of the Glazers, had to be 'the man' etc...), but we'll never see his like again. |
