There are multiple people dealing with transfers at a club and I don't believe for one minute they hand picked all of those players.

You’ll have head scouts, Scouts, analytic plebs, CEO, CEO’s right hand man, the manager all involved in selecting a player.

Van Gaal and Mourinho were both recruited by us and paid a lot of money; they held the cards, not Woodward. These were their signings. Their failures.

That’s different though. No manager in the world gets everything he wants. If the ‘no’ was because the player wasn’t gettable or the cost was simply too high then un-£#%&!ing-lucky. How about trying to teach Bailly and Lindelof to defend properly before you want two more? That’d be a novel trick, eh?
Neither were here under Van Gaal pal...

Are you ok?

Anyway, what if a manager is told no because the CEO thinks he knows better or scouts that were brought in under different managers were against signing a player

Is it still un-£#%&!ing-lucky?

Van Gaal would have been used to it. He's had two spells at Barca, during which various players were forced on him.

Mou didn't seem happy after Fred and Dalot were signed. He was kicking off very early on last summer. Besides, it's not always about players being forced on them. Are they having to accept very narrow options. A club of United's side should provide the manager with extensive variety of players in the market. Moyes (Fellaini) and Van Gaal (Blind) signing their go-to guys at the end of the window was a worry. Both managers had been in place since May. If they wanted them, why did it take three months?

I was talking about Lindelof, Bailly and Mourinho specifically, if you want to talk about Rojo, Darmian and van Gaal it’d be very similar.

You can name everyone who works at the club if you like, but no serious person is going to believe these managers didn’t sign off on all those players. If they did we’d be hearing it in the Telegraph every week.

But let’s keep having a dig at Solskjaer.

Woodward has allowed three (hopefully this is 4th time lucky) very different managers to re build the squad while also having a say on how the rebuild is done and also pulling the plug on the rebuilds after two years and progress (of sorts).

Ole has already had the rug pulled out from under him by the club not getting a replacement for Lukaku this summer, something he wanted and has already started to make comments about.

The last three managers have to take a large portion of the blame for it not working out here obviously. But let’s not pretend the structure above them didn’t have any sort of impact on them failing.

Anyway let’s hope Ole is a success (I have faith in him) so we don’t have to read anymore of these type of threads.
Good post, particularly bold bit. Don't want to dwell on any of the managers but they are the first people responsible for where we are at. Their failure could have been mitigated by any number of things such as a scouting network, competent negotiators etc but each got sacked as we were going nowhere.

With regards Ole complaining about not getting a striker, possibly more of a subbie at the scouts but as with RW where imo they are waiting until next year to try for Sancho who is their number 1 target and not settling for someone down the list, I think the players they thought were gettable this summer weren't long-term prospects. The question is why they weren't gettable; budget, scouting, negotiation failure etc.

I say 0-0

Didn't format correctly.

Kind of belies the notion these managers weren't supported.

I'm hoping this is the case. It's better to do this rebuild correctly than doing it quickly. Although in the case of our midfield we are about three players short so would quite liked to have seen at least one arrive this summer. We have possibly the worst midfield in the top half.

It's not just that our midfield players are individually poor, it's that there are just about no combination of players that would be greater than the sum of its parts. Like trying to put together a jigsaw but you've got pieces from different puzzles*

*May not be like that at all
