There is the clip where he is playing for Lazio, makes a belting tackle and the other player gives a cheeky kick out. The reaction is priceless

I loved jaap but Rio is the best central defender we've had since fergie took over. He was arguably the best centre back in the world when we signed him in 2002. At his best a wonderful defender who could pass, dribble, read the game, with pace, height and very rarely got booked, sent off or gave away silly fouls.

A perfect modern centre back.

It's really tough, but I'll have to go for Stam because he had the very rare combination of both types of centre-half: classy and lightning fast, yet more than able to send some @#%&! into next week if required.

Agree with this on Stam and if he was at the club for longer he would have surley gone onto to be the best. But that said, Rio was just pure class and was consistent year after year and even looked top $$$ last season at times.

Stam could lose his man or miss a challenge and he was too quiet on the pitch.

But he was usually sound, had presence, could play a bit, and above all he had a £#%&!ing great song
