Fifa has confirmed that the Uruguay striker Luis Suárez could miss the rest of the World Cup following his handball against Ghana. Suárez was given a straight red card for saving a goalbound-header on the line in extra-time, Ghana missed the resulting penalty and Uruguay went through to the semi-final after winning a shoot-out.
The striker will serve an automatic one-match ban ruling him out of the semi-final with Holland but Fifa's disciplinary committee will look at the case to see whether he should also be suspended for Uruguay's last match of the tournament - which will be either the final or the third-place play-off.
"For automatic red cards there is an automatic one-match suspension," Fifa spokesman Pekka Odriozola told a media briefing. "The disciplinary committee also opens a case and they will be looking at that incident and taking a decision." Fifa's disciplinary code gives the committee the option of a longer ban for "unsportsmanlike conduct".
Suárez is being hailed as a hero in his home country but the incident has provoked condemnation in other parts of the world. His action is also contrary to Fifa's fair play code which states: "Winning is without value if victory has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly. Cheating is easy, but brings no pleasure."

So they can look at that but refuse to look at a number of red cards that weren't reds? Nothing against them adding an extra ban but there's no consistentsy. Not sure I know how to spell consistentsy either.

Can't be arsed to trawl through the Thread, but I'm sure mention has been made of the incredibly 'neutral' coverage on ITV (& the BBC highlights show) last night?

Had to feel for the patriotic Ghanain Marcel Desailly. With his chest puffed out in pride & his hand on his heart, he watched on as the 'Black Stars' were eliminated in such heartbreaking circumstances. Of course, he can always console himself with his memories of lifting the World Cup with France.

Diego was £#%&!ing top class by the way.

Brazil were a joke after about ten minutes. This is a £#%&!ing ordinary Dutch side to say the least.

Uruguay v Germany Final please

Don't care what Suarez did last night at the end. His team got through that's all that matters to him but he really is an annoying @#%&! in the main though. He's always diving around holding his head when anyone aerially challenges him and asking for cards for people. I hope we never sign him the weasel faced @#%&!.

I'm not sure if he's an arse-faced weasel or a weasel-faced arse.

i thought saurez had a much better game last night than in the previous game when he scored, still not convinced that he would be a good signing for united though.

Nah, Argentina v Uruguay for me, going all the way back to 1930!!!

But you are right, the media bias last night was totally disgraceful and beyond funny - and where, exactly, was this "Africa" team you were not infrequently given the impression Uruguay were playing??

The TV coverage has routinely been patronising and condescending, and at times verging on outright racist

Fifa are a £#%&!ing joke. They might look at a handball yet no mention is ever even made of dealing with the cheating @#%&!s that infest every world cup holding their face when they've not even been touched.

As for the Afica thing, just playing devil's advocate but apparently the streets of several west African cities were full of 'revellers' celebrating Ghana's wins in their previous games.
