we were never saying arsenal looks great last season when we were drawing against teams like chelsea and then banging in 6 against relegation candidates like a team are doing now while arsenal were playing as we were.

this says it all.
I don't see how this is a surprise, though.

Having to integrate four new players was going to take a little time on its own, but with the absence of Rooney, Saha and Ronaldo we've had to rely on players we we really didn't want to so early in the season.

We started on Saturday with four new signings in the front six, plus Eagles. It would be crazy to expect them to link-up well so early on, especially given the lack of space afforded by Sunderland's approach.

I'd be worried if we had a full squad, all at close to 100% fitness, struggling to re-create the fluidity of last season. As it is, with players getting their fitness up, players settling in, players coming back from injury/suspension and the midfield and forwards getting used to playing together, there are a lot of reasons to think we will improve as the season goes on.

The answer to every symptom of United playing shit lately showed itself against sunderland.

Saha.

A proper centre forward affects so many things in a side, apart from the obvious direct goal threat.

Not signing cover for him will hit home hard.

Default eagles and nani

have done ok. the problem has not been individual performances, but rather the lack of a target.

and giggs and ronaldo playing too narrow, of course.

Don't worry January isn't that far away, Saha will be fine until then.

Like it did last season?

We beat Milan in what was probably the best game of football played in Europe last season without this 'proper centre forward'.

When ferie will tell us, predictably, that no-one will sell their best players mid-season.

Who forced us into signing Anderson then?

The more you look at it, the dafter that signing seems.

3-2, last minute winner.

What happened in the 2nd leg?

anderson will replace scholes. thinking ahead, see?

just a bit blinkered on the centre forward front.

Why does it look daft? A wonderfully gifted young player wanted by Chelsea, Madrid and Barca. A window appeared and gave Utd the chance to move in and sign him despite a few last minute attempts by other clubs (allegedly) to try and tempt him elsewhere.

His preferred position is on the left of midfield, playing Zizou used to, or a bit deeper a la Scholes. I can't wait until he's fully fit and clicks into gear.

Also, you have to look at it another way. Fergie's getting players in ready for when he retires, arguably. They'll have had a couple of seasons at Utd - know what it's like etc- and when he is replaced the disruption on the playing side of things will probably be minimal. Also it gives some of these new young signings a year or two learning from the likes of Giggs and Scholes which is no bad thing.

Isn't he left sided though? Whalers seems to think so.

And if so, what about Carrick?

Left sided but comes inside a lot or plays a deeper midfield role a la Scholes. See above.

I don't understand the problem with signing these two kids tbh. Long term, requires a bit of patience...oh hang on, there it is.

We seem to be playing a Roma like no front man-heavy attacking midfield system at the moment, and its obv not going great. Be interesting to see how it goes with a fully fit squad though....Could be boombastic if it clicks.

It's about having options these days. Ones that are better than O'Shea and Fletcher.

Also Scholes isn't getting any younger.

Yep, scored by a forward. He also scored the equaliser.

Perhaps it's worth considering that his absence is a big part of the problem. Or maybe the other guy who scored for us that night.
