Default Fergie's signings

Who would you say Fergie's best 5 and worse 5 signings are in his time?

Criteria, that's up to you.

Taking into account value for money, and Fergie's own insight into how the player would fit in to the side I would go with

Schmeichel
Cantona
Keane
Ronaldo
Yorke (bit of a wild card that one, but I thought he'd lost the plot paying all that money for Yorke. Treble season he was immense).

Pretty much the same but if you argue that Rooney was £30m and we knew what we were getting, i'd replace him with Ole.

Best

Schmeichel
Eric
Ronaldo
Bruce
Irwin

Worst

Veron
Berbatov
Leighton
Tosic
Webb

Have done it quite quickly and applied a "value for money" policy. Have also not included players who have come through the youth system even though they could be termed Fergie signings.

edit - replace Berbatov with Taibi.

IMHO Evra was just as good a signing as Irwin.

£500k in 1990 roughly equates to £5m in 2006 (we were up for sale fo £20m in the late 80s )

Both consistently brilliant. Other than his debut and two games against Spurs last season Evra has rarely dropped below an 8/10.

Fergie has said himself Rooney and Ronaldo are the best pieces of business he's done this decade.

Plus it's not fergies best value for money signings.

Rooney was a quality signing irrespective of the price.

there are lots in this decade alone. like the above poster evra has been a superb signing.

but vidic for 7m and now could leave in the summer for 30m.

ronaldo for 12m and 3 premier league, 1 champions league, 1 fa cup, 2 carling cups later - 80m.

who knows, the twins could turn out to be absolute bargains too.

Cant argue, even if we were doing value for money Rooney could conceivably be on the list.

Spose if we're talking about players that he (or his scouts) spotted and took a gamble on, Ronaldo, Solskjaer and Schmikes would have to be up there.

In fairness, the 2000s as a whole weren't Fergie's best in terms of signings...

On top of that Fergie talks alot of shite. "Wes Brown the most natural defender at the club" etc...

Oh yeah without a doubt. Don't think Ronaldo was as much as a gamble as the rest though.

So you are saying he's lying about Rooney?

Not lying. I'm just pointing out that he often contradicts himself on such things from one week to the next, depending on his mood or which player he wants to boost the confidence of. Came out on Saturday and said Rooney has always been the main man. As much as I love him, 2007/08 season was Ronaldo's year hence the World Player of the Year award.

Even down to his re-telling of the Cantona signing story, which seems to change every time he tells it and is also a completely different version of the story to that in the new Cantona biography.

Sheringham? Are you mad?

Treble year he was £#%&! bar the two goals in the finals and then despite a decent goals return the next season did nothing but slow us down.

Used to groan when 'Teddy' was starting ahead of Cole/Yorke. While we're on the subject, 'top red' Ole was never good enough to start during that era either.

For £1.2m though he was a steal. Could do with a 26 year old Ole on the bench now.
