John Barnes 'Suarez is a victim'

'Former Liverpool winger John Barnes has said Luis Suárez's diving is "not an issue" and he is a victim of Britain's moral police.

Suárez has been vilified in some quarters for his perceived cheating since he joined the Anfield club in January 2011. However the Uruguayan appears to have made a conscious decision to alter his image and is enjoying a terrific season with the Reds, scoring 18 goals.

But Barnes said the forward had been scapegoated by the British mentality towards divers.

"We are very quick to judge in this country as to what we consider to be diving," the ex-England international told HuffPost UK Sport. "You go to Argentina, Spain or Italy, diving isn't a major issue but because of the way we are in Britain, that we believe we are the moral policemen of the world, we judge people on our own morals.'

I used to play for our works team and we had a few lads from Mexico and Brazil in our side and, tbh, it was £#%&!ing embarassing. Even in training they'd go down like a sack of spuds and moan if you went in with a tackle. Had a few heated exchanges between them and the locals and a couple of Russian lads on the side about being soft The difference in attitude was there to see, the locals and other northern Europeans and Ruskies was like I would be where you pretend it didn't hurt even if you were in agony to look tougher, most of them would play it up to £#%&!. I'd be embarrassed rolling round on the floor, especially at the level we were playing at.

In a way the fat £#%&!ing @#%&! is right. Every footballer tries to cheat in every league in the world. Claiming for a throw-in or corner when you absolutely know it isn't the case is cheating. No ifs or buts it is cheating. Just like diving.

I'm not talking about Suarez, we all know he is an hateful @#%&!. I'm talking more about the general opinion that British football is 'clean'. It isn't. Is a defender who knows he has fouled in the penalty area telling the referee that he 'hasn't touched him' any worse than a diver? Because all defenders are guilty of that. This belief that British players are somehow different is a load of smelly groin and Barnes is right on that issue.

Barnes talks more shit than any other high profile ex-footballer in the media. This is quite some achievement. Couple that with the fact he was an atrocious manager and you wonder why anyone listens to anything he has to say.
