I think times have changed.

They don't seem to have the money or ambition to keep Varane anymore.

There was a run of games towards the end of last season where both Varane and Ramos were unavailable. Militao came into the team and was excellent. Alongside Nacho they looked a really good partnership. I believe if the get a decent offer they will sell.

xhaka seems to be available. I wouldn't say no. seems like a reasonable option at a reasonable price.
