Gutted. Was lucky enough to meet him. Lovely gentle fella. Complete opposite of how he used to play.

The story he told of being manager with Preston, stopping for petrol on the way home from a defeat at WBA and the bank declining his card cos he was on his arse... think he sold his medals and Utd bought them.

RIP Nobby, proper red x

You hear a lot of those types of stories about that generation of players. Half that 66 England squad ended up selling their medals, caps etc.

A generation of players that missed out on the big money.

Imagine someone like Stiles with a World Cup medalsl, a European Cup and 2 league titles to his name, and what he’d be worth today.

Good story on the radio from the World Cup semi

Alf: Norbert you know what your job is?

Nobby : Yes to mark Eusebio

Alf: I want you to mark him.

Nobby: Mark him for life or just this game.

Top man.

I broke the news to my Dad earlier. He was devastated. He knew him when he was a teenager. Nobby was on the same team as my Aunts husband. My Dad was a bit younger and he used to go and watch them. Dad said Nobby was accused of nicking a ball after training once.

My Dad is gutted too, knew him from his days working at Bogies nightclub in Stretford, said he was a top bloke. I’ve met him a few times apparently

Remember Michael Aspel collaring Nobby for an episode of TIYL during a prematch kick-in at OT. Would have been early 90s, I think. Spent the next six months guessing ‘Nobby Stiles’ before the programme started.

RIP.
