Also perhaps to shake off the cobwebs of the ensuing mid-late '80s-inspired hoofball that took over the English game and led to Taylor getting the national job. Remnants of which still exist today.

So I've read...

Had a profound effect on a dominant Liverpool and resurgent Everton

you are an arsenal fan and i claim my £5

fwiw the 87/88 liverpool team would have wiped the floor with most teams in europe and would have been a serious challenge to sacchi's milan the following season

i'd have that team right up there with the greats of the decade post heysel, along with milan, red star, barca, united 94 and ajax

Bloody loves a hypothetical achievement does Throb

United dominated Europe in the late 90s and Liverpool took a couple European Cups off Sacchi's Milan in the last 24 hours

Besides, who said they weren't good sides? But perhaps some evolution was needed on the field. Led by Eric iirc.

Watford?
Yep

Big Luther and the "crazy gang" influenced the English game as a result of their exploits at home and Europe

Taylor was appointed England manager, mate. Suggests that people were impressed by the hoof.

Around the time Ray Wilkins (he later of Milan status) was regarded as a crab for passing the ball a bit

No they didn't.

They reached one final and one semi final.

That's not domination.

Or are you being facetious. I can't tell with you.

Was a sly reference to Throb saying that United were Europe's clear best side throughout the late '90s.

But thanks for destroying it.

England manager = the FA? impressive stuff

Wilkins. Dull. Good at squaring it to Kevin Moran. One good season, before he left. Epitome of Aimless English football of the day. Chelsea, United, England: all losers.

united were the best team in europe in the late 90s.

liverpool's 87/88 team was their best since the late 70s - when they were the best team in europe.

these are not hypotheticals.

Throb is right, that 1987/88 Liverpool team was bloody good. That someone like me is saying it is evidence enough

Even though real madrid won the champions league in 1998, 2000 and knocked us out when we were holders?

2000 isn't the "late 90s" and in 1998 they virtually finished mid table in la Liga, FFS

oh the shame of it.

and the 1999-2000 season is just about as 'late 90s' as you can get.
