Default Betting Sponsorship in Football

Betting firm logos shown 3,500 times on TV during games last season.

How much of a problem is it?

Quote:
A study led by psychology experts from four universities measured the volume of gambling adverts during 10 matches that took place last season, featuring every Premier League club...

According to the analysis, the average game featured a gambling logo every 16 seconds...
The one thing the Premier League have brought in when it comes to betting sponsorships seems extremely weak and doesn't even kick in for another three years.

Premier League football clubs agreed a ban on front-of-shirt betting sponsors earlier this year. The voluntary measure does not kick in until 2026 and will still allow firms to advertise on shirt sleeves, pitchside hoardings and other sites around a stadium.
Don't mind a little bet every so often on whatever, but I £#%&!ing hate the betting sponsorships and how prevalent they are. The fact that SkyBet can sponsor an entire division is mental.

Reckon there's going to be a generation of kids are going to be much more susceptible towards it thanks to gambling type features in video games.

Also think it's pretty hypocritical when it's compared to something like Rooney getting a ban for swearing on the pitch against West Ham, because football should be family friendly programming, but "West Ham v Chelsea featured by far the most betting logos, a total of 3,522, or 37 for every minute of the game. The figure was particularly high because of West Ham’s deal with the online bookmaker and casino firm Betway, whose logo is plastered around the club’s home, the London Stadium."

Was never once tempted to sign upto Betway despite the 3,522 logos - makes you think.

All seriousness though, and with someone who has a family member who has ruined their life due to gambling, and know plenty of others, it's disgusting.

I've known a few with serious gambling issues. Part of the issue is how easier it is to bet these days with apps etc. You can bet on pretty much anything at any time the day without leaving your house. A pretty savage addiction as has ruined years of their lives.

Though not convinced advertising re football really had an impact on those in question.

Think Paul Merson summed it up brilliantly.

"When you have a drug addiction, there is only so much coke you can stick up your nose. When you have a gambling addiction, you can lose everything".

Gillespie's book is an interesting read.

Thankfully never been my vice, but find the amount of advertising around football and horse racing in particular horrific. TalkSport around big horse racing events in just wall to wall betting ads / promos / guest punters, it is very in your face.

Listened to the Steven Caulker Undr the Cosh podcast last week and he said something along the lines of that he got himself banned from all the casinos in the UK to try and stop himself going in and blowing all his money on roulette. So one of the casinos offered him a fully paid up all inclusive trip to one of their casinos abroad. He took their offer and they ended up making their money back and more off him.

Predatory to the extreme.

It's getting way out of hand, my 17 year old told me he was most excited at reaching 18 shortly so that he can have a bet on the match, he really thinks he can make a killing as he's read some %@#$&!s football stats website.

What's the world coming to when a 17 year old is more excited about betting than going to the match and getting a trifle inebriated.

The ads that annoy me the most are where they pretend to care.
