One of my favourite ever players. Landed in Porto at the same time as the players mid 90’s and everyone was crowding round the ‘stars’. I took my stinking 7am vodka breath straight over to the D man.

Possibly one of the best men ever to be made.

It was still in the top few fees for defenders at that time though wasn't it?

Highly doubt it. We paid 2.3m for Pallister the year before. Good shout though.

And that was a british record if i recall for any player at that time wasn't it? So there can't have been that many defenders much more expensive than Irwin at that time.

Good post though.

Good post though.
He was considered solid business verging on the cheap at the time . It's was only as the years progressed that people really appreciated how much a bargain buy he was.

Any objective appraisal as to how relatively cheap he was at the time only has to look at how much was being splashed out on his team mate defenders

Bruce - 2/3 years earlier at just over a million
Pallister - 1 year earlier at 2.3 million
Parker - 1 year later 2.3 million

Irwin - 650 grand

We shopped around in Debenhams those days yet always seemed to pay Kendals prices .Dennis was a C&A buy that should have been in Harrods . A bargain by whatever yardstick you measure him against, reliability ,temperament ,attack ,defence, fitness .fee kicks and pens .An absolute steal

HTH

So roughly the cost of Wan-Bissaka in modern day money.

Yes, that did help, thanks.

Good to see you've grasped that .Exactly the same

Just like Wan-Bissaka if he had signed for 14 million ,never missed a pen, eagle eyed dead ball expert, could cross the ball and was hardly ever missing because of injury for the rest of the decade

Watching that reminds me how sick to the stomach i felt losing the title to Blackburn on last day of the season.

regarding Irwin. Best full-back in Premier League history. No question.
