Kids, Serie A was good once - honest.

Undermined a little bit by Silvo being in the team

There's no f'ing way we would be lucky enough to convince Inter to pay 25m for Smalling....Conte can't be that daft

Are we still pretending Maguire is a defensive titan held back by shite?

Smalling is better than him at set pieces at both ends of the pitch, Maguire is almost offensively bad on attacking corners, there's a fag papers difference one on one defensively if that and ot necessarily in Maguire's favour either, Maguire is at least as likely to spend 30 seconds playing danger ball back and forth across the defence with Lindelof and his much touted comfort on the ball doesn't in all honesty look that much different to Smalling, who could also manage Maguire's occasional Hollywood diagonal out to a full back that's 50/50 if the full back manages to keep it in with his chest / chase 10 yards back to catch the ball before it goes out of play, and when Smalling had an ill advised gallop upfield at least had the pace to outrun Juan Mata chasing back. He'd be a far better partner for Maguire than Lindelof if nothing else.

For all Smalling is routinely characterised as thick as shit he looks likely to be one of the vanishingly few English players to make a go of it in Serie A, something which 'better' and 'cleverer' players didn't have the stones for.

Maguire's greatest skill is persuading the English press that he's a World Class centre half.

Was shite in reality though.

Get where you’re coming from but... nah. Need an actual decent passer of the ball if we’re going to insist on playing out from the back, and he’s not playing in the Serie A of old. Hasn’t Young also been making a good go of it out there?

Hence his nickname Terrible West

I'm sure the 2 top right (Bergomi and the other I can't for the life of me remember) in the Inter picture have been in every mafia film ever.

that's a massively false assessment...Maguire is pretty damn sound defensively and he's a hell of a lot better carrying the ball out of the back and passing the ball out of the back.

More so, he's a lot less prone to individual errors than Smalling and he's a much more commanding center half than Smalling ever was
