Nonsense. Fergie inherited a team of alcoholics.

But was appointed as the choice of a club in a financially dominant position who backed him from the off,it still took several years for him to show results encountering rocky points along the way did he not?

Financially dominant? Nowhere near. Rangers outbid us Terry Butcher.

We got outbid for players regularly but also had some good fortune. Missed out on Glenn Hysen, ended up getting Pallister, missed out on David Hirst, ended up getting some bloke called Cantona.

Financially dominant in that we generated more in match day revenue than anyone else, but the extent of it was a bit of a misnomer. Back then there was virtually no money in broadcasting and we had no real commercial dept to speak of. Michael Knighton could have bought a controlling interest in the whole club for 20m quid ffs.

We were notoriously tight back then as well. Almost every one of our playing staff could have earned more money away, and I think I recall Fergie saying he took a pay cut from Aberdeen. I’m pretty sure I remember reading McGrath’s book and he was on something like 200 quid a week. Hardly sheik Mansour stuff mate.

That's almost exactly what Fergie faced, but with nowhere near the facilities in place, the albatross of not having won the league in decades, a culture of alcoholism in the squad and an antiquated youth system.

Solskjaer is hardly working on a shoestring budget ffs. Our net spending over the last decade is one of the highest in Europe and we've one of the highest wage bills to match. We have just spent it horrendously.

Without wishing to derail the thread...
Fergie reacted to the situation he found himself by working within and on the youth setup, not by calling out the board or moaning in the press.
Ole has begun in this way himself not via confrontation and is on corse to get CL football for a second season. A contribution in the current financial situation of the club which surely merits investment in his stewardship.

Ole didn’t spend in 8 of those ten years

Sorry Ronny, you’re wrong. United were in a worse state when Fergie took over. He was though a much more successful manger prior to joining us than Ole was.

But this isn’t about relative situations - you said he’s the nearest thing we’ve had to Fergie. I assumed you was comparing managerial styles and capabilities, which is why I said you were way off the mark.

Coaching the players is not necessarily the managers job, Ole is doing well enough but the coaches must show improvement.
Is this the Phelan who coached United in the last few seasons? Albeit with Mulensteen?

If tje coaches aren’t good enough then Ole needs to bring in better ones - he is accountable.

always has the answer when he’s back is against the wall but still is left wanting against the sides we should beat

enjoy the win, but long term some tough choices will have to be made if we want to
be a top side in the league and europe

Tbf it was only the lobotomy crew that could even claim that after league doubles over Chelsea and city last season to go with wins at Everton, Spurs, Leicester. Same lads who said Ole should have been sacked by Christmas now want him sacked despite the fact he is vastly exceeding their expectations, almost like they are a bunch of dribbling %@#$&!s.
