Financially dominant in that we generated more in match day revenue than anyone else, but the extent of it was a bit of a misnomer. Back then there was virtually no money in broadcasting and we had no real commercial dept to speak of. Michael Knighton could have bought a controlling interest in the whole club for 20m quid ffs.
We were notoriously tight back then as well. Almost every one of our playing staff could have earned more money away, and I think I recall Fergie saying he took a pay cut from Aberdeen.
I’m pretty sure I remember reading McGrath’s book and he was on something like 200 quid a week. Hardly sheik Mansour stuff mate.
