Default Gareth Barry and Michael Johnson

the two players to return the title to Anfield after such a long painful wait.

Arf!

Rafa Benitez has made Aston Villa's £12m-rated captain Gareth Barry his top summer transfer target. (Sun)

The Liverpool boss is also keen to bring Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson to Anfield in a £12m deal. (Mail)

2 good players and Gareth Barry on particular strikes me as a young Barry Venison - a steady pro who will probably turn in a heck of a season one of these days.

Not enough to win the league but not bad purchases I reckon.

don't think it's an area they really need to address to be honest, would enhance their squad but hardly change the world.

Barry is noot good enought to play midfield for one of the top 4. Good player, steady, but one paced and pretty much always gets dominated in the big games.

I hope they waste money on him.

He always makes me think of a decent ball playing centre half playing in midfield. Kinda like Ronnie Johnsen when he played there, though Barry looks like him running in a strobe.

Yes, he has found a career there, but in his youth he looked a better prospect as a LB or CH, composed on the ball. His lack of pace was always an issue though, stuck into midfield where his ability on the ball could be used, but not a top 4 player in that position and certainly should not be in the England team while carrick is not even in the squad.

Correct. Baffling that a top flight coach cannot see this.
