The average Italian (here in Sardinia) is not racist, but treats the beach sellers in a curt but polite way, but from June through September they are treated like shit by all the northern (mainly, and a lot from Rome) italians here on holiday.
I learned my lesson on racism years ago, and talk to them all, and now have many find us on the same beaches that they work, year in year out, that I would call friends, just trying to make a living.
