We were shouting from the rooftops that we ‘scouted’ hundreds and hundreds of right backs. This is the way the new United operate apparently. That came back to bite them in the ass a bit didn’t it?

No one will remember.

As limited as he might be on the ball, he’s never once out in performances as bad as those that Maguire and Lindelof dropped these last few weeks

Yes he has. He's £#%&!ing garbage. Replacing anyone in our back line with Smalling would be like trying to put out a house fire with a flamethrower.

Some really short memories in here. Smalling was awful. The only thing good about him was watching him contort his body into some weird shape just to pass a football 10 yards. Surely the most awkward footballer we've ever had.

He looked at pain every single time he had the ball at his feet.

Positionally he was ok and he was pretty dominant in the air but he is not the answer. We really struggle to play it out from the back, we need a defender who compliments Maguire with a good touch and a cool head.

Lindelof should be that defender but he has let us down far too much.

Atm that sounds quite appealing.

He’s average as £#%&!

Still our 2nd best CB though

Should have sold him before now and brought a replacement.

You know what I mean though. He's not better than our current defenders, he's just different. They all have failings that mean they aren't good enough. With Smalling it's the fact he is so awful on the ball. Bailly is far too rash and always injured. Lindelof is an utter fanny who often seems to get caught out positionally and isn't dominant enough. Jones injures himself going into the canteen. Rojo is a madman.

For all his faults, Maguire is the only one who looks anywhere near the quality we need. If he was paired with someone decent, he would probably be ok.

Sounds like he’s staying

Will take some climb down from Ole for him to start regularly.

More like brain damage from a big fall.

Yeah just goes straight back in without any scrutiny for Ole.

but the suggestion of a climbdown is that ole has taken some die-in-a-ditch position on smalling, whereas he has barely registered a comment. he will, if he wants to play smalling (as he should), simply smile and say he's glad he is available and he is going to use our full squad.

no climbdown.

similarly, it would not be a climbdown if he played two or more defensive midfielders. it would just be common sense prevailing.

I’d argue that him sending him out on loan last season and freezing him out of the squad at the start of this season is good inclination is hat he thinks of Chris tbh.

He’ll look quite stupid if Smalling just walks back into the squad for Newcastle.
