Default Brian McClair on Life Goals

Superb listen if you’ve a couple of hours to spare

I have a brief recollection of McClair. Fergie said he was a vastly underrated player.

He scored 31 in 87-88 for man utd.
That was the first time anyone had scored 30 or more since Denis Law scored 30 in 68-69.

He was brilliant that season. Brilliant for Celtic too before coming to United. Don’t think moving him to midfield was the best of ideas.

Depending on your age, you’ll remember him as:

Main man up front - 92
‘Number 10’ and bit part - 95
Midfield - 97

Quintessential good pro. Always came across as a smart
Guy too,

We offered £400k for him.
Celtic wanted £2million, the tribunal set a fee of £850k.

Real Championship Manager Stuff.

Same Season

Liverpool paid £1.9m for Beardsley
Spurs sold Gough to Rangers £1.5m

As a younger he was the first player I ever remember being disappointed if his name was on the team sheet, thought he was absolutely £#%&!ing crap.

When Eric was signed I remember the word on the street was he'd be replacing Hughes (my childhood hero) and partnering with McClair. Was proper gutted and grew a very irrational hatred for the man

The next game, I think it was before Eric's debut Hughes absolutely smashed one in from about 20 yards in front of the K-stand, the rest was history and so was that @#%&! McClair.

Absolutely hated him at the time but you cannot argue he was a great company man. Kind of guy could fill in in midfield if he had to. Clever player but suffered maybe because of a lack of selfishness.

The John O'Shea of forwards. (Who was also underrated.)

His best quality was being Scottish. Post his first season, hated him being on the pitch and anyone who liked him.

Never understood the scepticism. He was incredibly versatile and brilliant in every position for us. A United legend

I wasn't really a fan of his.

I never forgave him for the penalty miss at Highbury

had. and that's his equivalent of low level sadness anyway.

I was reading a list of united's 100 best players for some reason yesterday. mcclair was higher than mcgrath. obvs, the conclusion is "don't read stupid lists probably voted for by people like dunk", but still....

£#%&!ing hell, mcgrath would be the best defender in the league today. McClair would be timo pukki.
