I'd suggest doing it from a kit before you start buying that book and doing it properly. It isn't hard to do it properly the worst part is cleaning everything up when you have finished. If you do start doing it properly it's best to have a few on the go at a time so one is always ready for drinking otherwise you'll get gaps when you have none.

Some of the more expensive kits aren't too bad but you are right you'll never get a decent pint without a proper setup. I've done quite a few from scratch; grinding the grain myself and boiling up the hops but it takes time and dedication which, judging from the decreasing enthusiasm in this thread, young Benjamin doesn't have.
