As always, there are a number of pros and cons for a signing like this. I've thought of 5 for each.
Pros: - Proven Premier League quality. - English, so there won't be any cultural adaptation issues, and he will already know a lot of the players well from England duty. - Seems like a very good pro, who would have a positive impact on the culture of the squad. - Good age, as he turns 27 this July, so should have another 4-5 seasons at the top. - The rarest commodity in the game - a genuine world-class goalscorer. Cons: - Tottenham would want, and most likely get, a quite ridiculous fee, that would no doubt be more than what he's actually worth. - As he turns 27 this year there is very little re-sale value should he wane after a couple of seasons. - Strong argument that he's passed his peak, given the niggling injuries, and reduction in goal output. - Would he block the progress and development of Rashford and Greenwood? - Are there other areas in the side that would benefit more from the investment, such as a wide forward like Sancho, or a holding midfielder like Neves? One thing I am very confident about though, is Ole making the right decision. The most impressive part of his tenure so far has been recruitment, and he's got it pretty much bang-on with every signing he's made. I personally would lean towards not signing Kane, as I think we need to build the attack around Rashford. Use the money for Sancho instead, and trust Rashford to grow into our first-choice centre forward. |

Transfer fees to us are not like transfer fees to other clubs. No one in this country - and few world wide - are in the position we are to offset investment in players with increased revenues through marketing. Not even close. Woodward will be in a position to know very accurately how many more shirts we’d sell, how many more link ups we could anticipate and so on; and by significantly improving the team in the process he’d take the heat off himself from a footballing perspective.
That said, everything has it’s limits. We could pay a lot, but 200m would be madness. |
