Default Home Broadband... From Space!

Starlink from Space X

Quote:
High-speed, low latency broadband internet.

Starlink is now delivering initial beta service both domestically and internationally, and will continue expansion to near global coverage of the populated world in 2021.

During beta, users can expect to see data speeds vary from 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms in most locations over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.

As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations and improve our networking software, data speed, latency and uptime will improve dramatically.

Looked into it last month and coming to my area late 2021, costs £439.00 + £54.00 for the hardware and shipping, and then £89.00 per month for the service.

I only get 25mbps with 25ms as it is, and when I move in a month or two it's only going to be the same, if not worse. There don't seem to be any plans to improve the infrastructure where I'm moving to either, so looks to be the best option if I want a faster connection, albeit at a premium.

Is it the future of home broadband? Or just more Space Junk to dirty up the skies?

I thought the point of the starlink launches was to provide cheap internet around the globe

For that price, I'd want internet beamed straight into my head

I've always wanted fibre optic, never been available where I've lived though.

BT were meant to be improving the speeds and reliablity of our connection where we live now, but it's managed to drop from 30mbps to around 25mbps in the last year, so they didn't do the best job.

Ah man, can't live like that these days.....

We're getting a new new fibre optic in the area. Claiming 1000mbps
They've annoyed me with concrete dust and waking me after nights so much that they can ram it whatever the speed.....

I will not be turned.....

I’ve never met anyone who is happy with BT. They’ve all got their issues but I’ve genuinely never had anyone recommend bt to me or say “yeah I love them, great service”
