A THUG fan was banned from all matches for three years yesterday for punching Everton star Phil Neville in the back.

Liverpool supporter Michael Blackmore, 48, hit Neville as he took a throw-in during the Merseyside derby last month.

And last night Liverpool slapped a life ban on Anfield season ticket-holder Blackmore.



Neville, 31, was also allegedly spat on.

Blackmore was first picked out on CCTV hurling insults. The footage then revealed him “digging” the player in the back, Liverpool Community Justice Centre was told.

Blackmore’s lawyer Angela Bellingham suggested Neville tried to provoke the fan, who was at Hillsborough and Heysel. But the claim was rejected by Judge David Fletcher, who said: “Goodness knows what was in your mind when you did what you did.

“For someone who went through the difficult football years of the 70s and 80s, it is even more surprising.”

After the case, Blackmore, who admitted common assault, complained the incident was “blown out of all proportion”.

Liverpool fan Ian Golder, 39, also appeared yesterday on a common assault charge. He denies spitting at Neville and is due for trial in July.
