tbh it's probably the best time. players need minutes playing competitively and don't need nursing with niggling injuries etc. better now than in march or something.

Youngsters impress on national duty

Tom Cleverley and Febian Brandy both scored twice for England's Under-20s in a rampant 5-0 win over Montenegro at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

Brandy put England in front after 13 minutes when he beat the offside trap and finished neatly. The Manchester-born striker then added a second on the stroke of half-time with a rasping volley.

After the break Cleverley, who impressed in a first half in which he'd also missed a penalty, got in on the goalscoring act.

The Reds midfielder grabbed England's third three minutes after the break, and then with eight minutes remaining he skilfully curled a low shot into the bottom corner, before Tope Obadeyi completed the rout in injury time.

It's the perfect preparation for Cleverley, Brandy and co. ahead of next month's FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt.

Elsewhere, Oliver Norwood made his debut for Northern Ireland U21s in a 2-1 friendly defeat to Portugal. Burnley-born Norwood was joined in the side by fellow Reds midfielder Corry Evans.

I went to the England game. England were very good, although Montenegro looked half interested at best. Cleverley was easily the best player on show, his 2nd goal was quality. Having said that, Brandy's second was fantastic.

Trouble with Brandy is he's just too small inteet? As for cleverley, hope we only loan him out short term, would love to see him get a few appearances for the first team under his belt this season and as has been said, he can get goals from midfield. Don't think he'd struggle physically either.
