When was it we last had a *genuine* candidate for World Player of the year in our team?

Scholes has been a great Utd player, but neither he nor Giggs has ever had that one season where they were without doubt the best player in the league never mind the world. Consistent, maintained excellence has been Scholes's strength. 2002/03 was probably his best season, 20 goals from midfield, hugely important role in our last title, but that year RVN with his 44 goals was our best player.

World select playing 4-4-2, 98-03, Scholes best years, even then it would have been a stretch to put him into a world select. His lack of impact on an international tournament will always be held against him over these awards.

Was poor at the last WC, but at the last European championship he scored a few goals, and has had some key contributions in the latter stages of CL for Chelsea. He should never have been in the running for it either, but he is more of a media friendly personality than Scholes is, and that type of thing helps in these popularity contests, hence Beckham twice coming in Second in the polls.

It's a bit of a shame that a consumate pro like scholes gets looked over while some fat @#%&! with a penchant for deflections and tesco adverts doesn't.

in 1999 Beckham was the best midfielder in the world, he was phenomenal and we seem to forget just how brilliant he was.

Itsnot only his good loos or status which propelled him to be no.7, england captain and next in line for captaincy. he was a £#%&!king amazing player. there was a stage where everytime he got the ball to the edge of the box it was as good as a penalty if yorke was there.

he worked his socks off as well, legend in my eyes.
