He would make a reasonable squad player and is better than Rojo, Bailly and Jones so let's not do him down immediately.

That said, if Ole wants to persist with centre halves who can pass and move the ball out of the back then he's fooked.

I don't want him back here either, but that is a bit extreme no?

yes probably...i'm still a massive Ole fan either way just really don't want Smalling back at the club. He's shocking. He makes Luiz and Rudiger look like Maldini.

Roma are about to be sold so they'll probably have the money soon.

We should just give Conte a bell and offer him our entire team from four years ago with a volume discount.

He’s probably our 2nd or 3rd best CB.

Not if Ole is going to insist on £#%&!ing around with it in our own box he’s not. Can you imagin a combination of Wan-Bissaka, Smaling, De Gea and Shaw trying to play out from the back?

I’d sack off playing from the back. It doesn’t suit our midfield either.

Not sure what you’re doing putting Shaw in with that lot

He’s really good on the ball

That’s only one part of it though. He lacks the intelligence for good positioning. Part of the reason Varane got caught on the ball the first time was because the the rest of the defence and midfielders weren’t giving him good passing options - they were ball watching. Shaw is routinely out of position and makes poor decisions. Spurs goal in the the first game back was an example from many. Poor header, then moves forward leaving Maguire exposed.

I thought he’s been good defensively for the most part this year
Missed him big time since he got injured

Anyway that’s still nothing to do with him playing out from the back which he’s pretty good at

Ok, well we can disagree on that. One of the things you need to effectively build from deep are players who have the confidence to fire the ball into midfield when given an opportunity. Do you see Shaw as that player, or does he routinely control it backwards and recycle it back into the danger zone? It’s a ‘safe’ option that’s far from being actually safe.
