Could have also given himself a much needed kick up the arse.

Shouldn't play again after last night.

Had the run of the wing but never went forward, fitness would have played a role but it's mainly because he knows there's no end product so doesn't want to put himself in the situation.

alternatively, a disciplined performance in a difficult away game by a player just back from injury.

Wouldn’t judge him on the game the other night, more the last decade.

Still a bizarre player. Has one of the best first touches at the club and made his name in England tearing past players. Too simplistic to say the injury affected him?

Too one dimensional. Very easy for top pro’s to figure out.

No one could take a long diagonal down as well as Tone, and even his harshest critic couldn’t fault his effort, but in the end he was just a flawed journeyman player who punched well above his weight.

Agree about one dimensional, but he did give up on himself a bit. Had a decent first season iirc. Was never going to be Ronaldo but put lots of crosses on Wazza in 09/10. After that barely even attempted to beat his man.

Which is what I’ll never understand about him. Why not at least try to expand your options? Why not learn to come inside? Why not try to develop what Scholes might describe as “the trick”? At the very least you’ll give yourself a better shot at going outside if you force a left back to play you straight up; but he was way too easy to show inside.

Surely if you play for United you owe it to the club, and yourself, to at least attempt to expand your abilities, but no; what Valencia could do the day he walked through the door was what Valencia can do now, the only thing that changed was his pace. There’s a lot about Valencia as a person to like, but he is the archetypal thick footballer. Shame.

On a side note, I wondered who would become our new Sunderland with the demise of the real Sunderland. Appears it’s Inter.
