It does come across that way, supposed certainties that never happened - Gaitan was the same. Still, I think I'd prefer Garay to Otamendi, he's a good defender and fairly reliable - reliability being one of the things the current lot lack.

Between us I think Saffers and I have covered him pretty well

If we had several ball-playing defenders, then perhaps he'd be a more viable option. I just think if you stick him next to Smalling (who van Gaal seems to like) you're not really significantly enhancing our ability to play out from the back in the style we want.
